
Postnatal check-up is an important gynaecological examination which is usually carried out 6 weeks after childbirth. It is designed to check and assess physical and emotional women's recovery after pregnancy and childbirth and support transition to a new lease of life. It is an opportunity for mums to talk about their wellbeing, health, breastfeeding and any challenges they may be facing.
During the examination, the gynaecologist checks the condition of the uterus - whether it is contracting and shrinking properly after childbirth, the condition of the vagina and perineum - assess the healing of any lacerations, episiotomy or caesarean section, check the uterus and fallopian tubes - checking that there are no signs of infections or other complications. We talk about breastfeeding - possible breastfeeding problems, milk retention, sore or cracked nipples, pain and possible postnatal problems. The check-up also includes contraceptive counselling and planning for the next pregnancy; and mental health assessmentincluding the risk of postnatal depression.
Screening is very important as it ensures safe uterine recovery and wound healing, allows preventing infections and complications, provides advice and support for breastfeeding and lifestyle support, and enables monitoring of physical and emotional well-being Mum's emotional and social well-being. It is also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about changes in your body, sexuality and how you feel after giving birth.
