Fetal growth monitoring ultrasound is ultrasound scanin which the gynaecologist assesses whether the fetus is developing and growing in accordance with its gestational age and whether it is getting enough oxygen and nutrients. This check is usually carried out in third trimester or earlier if there are reasons to monitor the pregnancy more closely.

During the examination, the gynaecologist measures key fetal body parameters such as head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) and head transverse diameter (BPD). These measurements are used to calculate Estimated Fetal Weight (EFW)which indicates whether the foetus is developing at the expected rate.

If necessary, the following shall also be carried out Doppler ultrasoundto check the blood flow in the umbilical cord, uterine arteries and the fetal cerebral vessels. This information helps to assess whether the placenta is functioning properly and whether the foetus is receiving sufficient oxygen and nutrients.

Screening allows early detection fetal growth arrest (IUGR) or excessive growth, which is important for timely action and birth planning. It is a crucial part of pregnancy monitoring, especially in higher risk pregnancies (hypertension, diabetes, placental problems, stunting in a previous pregnancy).

It is a conventional abdominal ultrasoundwhich is painless and safe. It takes about 10-20 minutes, depending on the position of the fetus and the extent of the measurements.

Fetal growth ultrasound thus provides a precise view of the baby's progress and helps to ensure that the pregnancy is carefully and timely monitored.
