Dry vagina (vaginal dryness) is a common problem in which the vaginal mucosa does not produce enough moisturecausing discomfort, irritation, itching or pain during intercourse.

The most common cause is a deficiency of the hormone oestrogenwhich often occurs after menopauseas well as after childbirth, during breastfeeding, or due to the use of hormonal contraceptives, stress or certain medications (e.g. antihistamines or antidepressants).

Treatment depends on the cause and may include the use of moisturising gels or lubricants fragrance-free, local hormone therapy (in the form of creams, tablets or oestrogen rings), a healthy lifestyle - drinking enough fluids, eating a balanced diet and regular sexual activity that stimulates vaginal blood flow and laser therapy.

If the problem is recurring or causing pain, it is advisable to consult a gynaecologistwho will determine the cause and prescribe the most appropriate treatment.
