A nuchal translucency is a non-invasive fetal ultrasound scan that measures the fluid in the fetal neck.

This is a screening test to assess the risk of having a baby with chromosomal defects and other developmental abnormalities.

The nuchal translucency could best be called early fetal morphology, because in addition to the nuchal translucency measurement, we also check the presence of the nasal bones and the correct development of the fetus (presence of arms, legs, brain, abdominal wall, etc.).

The most ideal time for the examination is from 11 6/7 to 13 6/7, or a fetal size of 45 to 84 mm.

The examination is performed through the abdomen, except in exceptional cases vaginally (poor visibility, low-lying foetus).

Increased nuchal transluscency in the fetus may indicate chromosomal defects, heart defects or
some genetic syndromes. We are 90% reliable in measuring nuchal transluscency.

From 1 May 2023, the nuchal transluscency with double hormone test is free for all pregnant women who have health insurance.

A double hormone test is a blood test where certain levels of the hormone PAPP-A and free ßhCG
can indicate certain heart defects and other chromosomal defects. After adding the blood
values to the calculation, the test is 95% reliable.

For greater reliability, we recommend carrying out the test NIPT.
